The world’s first steel shed has been unveiled in central London, with more than 600 lights to go around the block.
In the city’s Old City, the new shed was opened to the public last week and, after several months of renovations, is set to become the world’s largest outdoor electric lighting system.
It is designed to be used by up to 3,000 people and can be fitted out with up to 500 different lights.
The new shed has become the first in the UK to feature all-steel construction, with panels of glass and glassy concrete providing the most reflective surfaces, while a massive steel shaft delivers all the light from the two sides.
And, thanks to a customised set of LED lights, the system can now be used in the dark as well.
“This is a world first, and we are so proud to be a part of it,” said Stephen Pang, chief executive of the National Grid Foundation, which built the shed.
With a capacity of more than 5,000 lumens, the light-filled shed is one of the largest in the world.
Although it is just three floors high, it will be able to house 1,000 tonnes of equipment, including 40 power generators, 20 batteries, and more than a dozen computers.
Its design has also allowed the National Rail Network to be able move around the site to ensure it is accessible for emergency services, fire and rescue services and other workers.
To help make the system more sustainable, it is also fitted with a water-recycling system and will be used for emergency cleaning.
For the time being, the shed is the largest on the planet and will only be able fit up to 40 people at a time.
However, in the coming months, it could be used as a public-private partnership to help the UK’s electricity network.
In fact, it looks set to be the world largest solar-powered electric light-making facility.
Over the years, National Grid has developed a number of LED light-producing technologies that it can sell to the private sector.
Now, the foundation hopes that its new facility will be the start of a wider range of electric lighting options.
Currently, the National Electricity Market Authority (NEMA) has the final say over whether a project can go ahead.
But it has been under pressure to increase the amount of green energy available to power the nation’s electricity networks, and to make sure it is up to date with new technology.
After all, there are so many green initiatives going on in the capital.
So, with the government looking to introduce new policies to increase green energy supply, National Rail has asked the National Energy Research Centre (NERC) to conduct a study into how best to make the National Power System sustainable.
According to the organisation, the NERC study should be completed by the end of the year.
This will mean that the National System will have a more sustainable future.
